Its all about negotiation!
For doing the home interiors, every client has his own budget. At the same time every vendor targets certain amounts of margin for every project he undertakes. Which is fair enough for the kind of service he provides.
When negotiating, vendor may or may not be ready to compromise on the margins. It depends on various factors:
From vendor’s perspective:
1. Kind of business he did recently
If the vendor is doing good probably he will not compromise on this margins but if the vendor is in kind of slack situation then he may compromise on margins and will be ready for negotiations.
2. Is it really worth it?
At times, client expects the world in small budget. Just for an example if the client demands one bedroom to be renovated for absolutely free.(An Exaggerated example)In this case it wont be possible for the vendor to take up the project as it wont be worth it for him/her. Like wise there may be number of scenarios where vendor may feel that he will be left with little or no profit because of which he may not accept the project.
From client’s perspective:
1. Its not always about money
Yes, Its not always about money. You should not handover the contract simply to any random vendor just because he quoted less. You may run in to various problems during the execution phase. You may face quality issues, poor craftsman ship, delayed completion and abrupt demand of unquoted payment.
2. Know the cost of material
As the interior quote depends on material cost and labor cost; take some time out and visit various hardware shops to know the approximate material cost for your interior work. Just to let you know you will never be able to come up with the accurate cost as the material which get delivered to the end customer is at a different rate and the cost at which it gets delivered to an interior designer is at a totally different rate because of all the business we give them. Let the shopkeeper know the measurements of the items and get the approximate cost of it. Once you know the approximate cost you can determine how much labor cost and professional fees are being charged.
3. Its the trust
During consultation for home interiors and While taking the quotations from various vendors you will probably get the feel of the vendor to ahead with. If the reputation of the vendor is good and if somehow you liked the person and his suggestions and his work. Probably you should go ahead with him/her. If you really wish to go ahead with him/her then negotiate the amount, set the expectations and reach an agreement.
Again, please don’t expect the world in small budget. 🙂
